How fast is the RC plane? ›

Such planes typically have 3-4 foot wingspans and use 200-400 watt motors, reaching speeds well in excess of 100 mph! Some gas kits can achieve speeds of 200 mph. By comparison, typical sport planes fly at 40-60 mph, sailplanes from 20-60 mph.

The first truly successful Radio Control airplane was the Big Guff, built in 1938 by the Good brothers, Walt and Bill. See the Big Guff fly in the AMA film, The Pioneers, produced by Jay Gerber. This case contains a reproduction of the radio transmitter and receiver used by the Good brothers to fly the Guff.

The most commonly used wing for RC planes are Rectangular [3]. The rectangular wing is the best wing for usage from a manufacturability point of view. The rectangular wing has a tendency to stall rest at the wing root and provides adequate stall warning, adequate aileron effectiveness, and is usually quite stable.

The simplest/easiest planes to build are made out of flat sheets (foam or cardboard) without curved surfaces. In my experience with expanded polystyrene like Thermocol, it is difficult to cut with a knife but much easier to cut with a hot wire..... so cardboard might be your best option for your first plane.

RC hobbyists are considered “recreational users” by the FAA. Specific rules apply to us, intended to ensure public safety in the increasingly busy skies. For example, RC hobby aircraft are not allowed near airports, over stadiums and sporting events, and in security-sensitive areas.

Park Flyers. Park flyers are great for beginners because they are simple to put together, tough, and forgiving to fly. They're lightweight, perfect for flying in smaller areas like local parks, and come with lots of helpful instructions to make learning easier. Plus, they're not too expensive!
