How to Form Spanish Adjectives

  1. Masculine singular is the default form and this tends to end with –o. This becomes –a for feminine singular. The plural forms add –s at the end.

Here are some examples with lento (slow):

El chico es lento.

The boy is slow.

La chica es lenta.

The girl is slow.

Los hombres son lentos.

The men are slow.

Las mujeres son lentas.

The women are slow,

  1. When Spanish adjectives end with –a or –e, there is no difference between the masculine and feminine forms. The plural form is created by adding an –s at the end.

Here are some examples with grande (big):

El hospital es grande.

The hospital is big.

La montaña es grande.

The mountain is big.

Los hospitales son grandes.

The hospitals are big.

Las montañas son grandes.

The mountains are big.

  1. Most Spanish adjectives that end with –z or –l have no difference between the masculine and feminine form. The plural form is created by adding –es at the end. However, the letter –z changes to –c.

Here are some singular examples:

Ana es fiel a sus principios.

Ana is true to her principles.

Carlos es fiel a sus principios.

Carlos is true to his principles.

Tu hermana parece infeliz.

Your sister looks unhappy.

Tu hermano parece infeliz.

Your brother looks unhappy.

Here are some singular and plural examples:

Desde que te casaste te veo muy feliz.

Since you got married you seem very happy. (you=tú)

Desde que os casasteis os veo muy felices.

Since you got married I see you both very happy.

Desde que ellas se mudaron las veo muy felices.

Since they moved in I see them very happy.

Tú eres capaz de cualquier cosa.

You are capable of anything.

Vosotros sois capaces de cualquier cosa.

You are capable of anything.

Vosotras sois capaces de cualquier cosa.

You are capable of anything.

Fumar marihuana es legal en algunos países.

Smoking marijuana is legal in some countries.

Los matrimonios entre personas del mismo sexo son legales.

Same-sex marriages are legal.

Las corridas de toros deberían ser ilegales.

Bullfighting should be illegal.

La Iglesia es leal a la corona.

The Church is loyal to the Crown.

Los perros son los animales más leales.

Dogs are the most loyal of animals.

Las ministras son leales al gobierno.

The (female) ministers are loyal to the government.

The adjective “español” ( Spanish) is an important exception to this:

El hombre español.

The Spanish man.

La mujer española.

The Spanish woman.

Los hombres españoles.

The Spanish men.

Las mujeres españolas.

The Spanish women.

  1. Most Spanish adjectives that end with –n or –r, form the feminine singular by adding an –a, the masculine plural by adding –es, and the feminine plural by adding –as.

Here are some examples with holgazán (lazy):

Tengo un hermano holgazán.

I have a lazy brother.

Tengo una hermana holgazana.

I have a lazy sister.

Tenemos dos hermanos holgazanes.

We have two lazy brothers.

Tenemos dos hermanas holgazanas.

We have two lazy sisters.

Here are some examples with hablador (talkative):

Conozco a un hombre hablador.

I know a talkative man.

Conozco a una mujer habladora.

I know a talkative woman.

Conocemos a muchos hombres habladores.

We know many talkative men.

Conocemos a muchas mujeres habladoras.
